What a F L A P!
Dressed in silver sequins, twenty-six Gainesville “flappers” shimmied onto the stage of the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach on April 15 and sang the Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus to a First Place in Division A (small choruses) of the Region 9 (Florida) Sweet Adelines International 2010 chorus and quartet competition. Devoted and hardworking co-Directors Diane Sherley and Chanda Morris, mother and daughter respectively, also pranced in delight on their way to accept the medals. A peppy (and just a bit naughty) uptune “Back in Those Days Gone By” and an emotive, poetic ballad “If I Were the Only Girl in the World” showcased our “Roaring Twenties” competition theme. The approximately 6 minutes onstage flew by—after hundreds of hours of rehearsing, costuming and planning right up to the big day. And the gorgeous tunings of the choruses of our Fellow Region 9 Sweeties swelled our hearts as our ears drank in their sounds. Florida’s Sweet Adeline choruses, some numbering well over 150 voices, are highly skilled and competitive showgals—hearing them was joy at its finest.
Members—some new and some with many years’ experience—share a common love for singing in four-part harmony. “Real Women, Real Harmony, Real Fun” is our slogan and we invite ladies of all shades, ages, and occupations who want more musical harmony in their lives to join us. If someone you know (or maybe just little old you?) loves to sing, come visit our Thursday night rehearsals at the Covenant Church 7:00 pm to 9:30pm located at 3115 NW 16th Blvd, Gainesville, FL. Or call Beckie Preston (352-318-1281) or Sharleen Simpson (352-371-1013) for more information. Rehearsals are open to the public, and we love an audience; so come take a seat and hum along. But you’d better do it quietly, or our directors will have you on the risers in no time flat!
